The Shift in Dog Care: From Treatment to Lifespan Management

In homes across the United States, dogs are cherished as beloved family members. Recent advancements in veterinary medicine are not only allowing our canine companions to enjoy longer lives but also enhancing their overall health and quality of life.

However, aging is an unavoidable reality for dogs, just like it is for humans. As they grow older, dogs experience various physiological changes that can lead to decreased mobility, cognitive decline, and chronic conditions like kidney disease.

But must aging equate to a cycle of treating one ailment after another? Not necessarily. Is there a more proactive approach to managing our dogs’ health as they age? Absolutely.

This article explores a transformative shift in canine healthcare, steering away from merely addressing diseases and focusing instead on the biological mechanisms of aging to help dogs lead longer, healthier lives.

Thanks to enhanced care and nutrition, dogs now frequently reach their teenage years. Traditionally, senior dog care has predominantly centered on disease management, treating each illness as an isolated issue: such as using pain relief for arthritis or chemotherapy for cancer.

This method resembles a game of whack-a-mole, addressing single issues rather than taking a comprehensive view of a dog’s overall health and aging process.

Recently, the veterinary field has drawn inspiration from human geriatric medicine. Rather than perceiving aging as a steady decline, veterinary professionals are embracing a new perspective on modern dog care—a paradigm shift that views aging as a process that can be proactively managed at the biological level.1,2

Several factors have fueled this transformation. Firstly, dogs are increasingly regarded as integral family members.3 Pet owners are demonstrating a strong commitment to their dogs’ care, often willing to invest in premium dog food and high-quality veterinary services to ensure their pets’ lifelong wellness.

Moreover, veterinary practices are placing greater emphasis on preventive care, including vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and regular dental check-ups to avert or delay the onset of diseases.

Another contributing element is the advancements in veterinary nutrition research, which have significantly enhanced the quality and nutritional value of dog food, supporting canine health throughout all life stages, from puppies to seniors. Furthermore, ongoing veterinary research into the biology of diseases has improved our understanding of disease mechanisms at a molecular level, allowing for more targeted treatments that enhance health outcomes and minimize declines in quality of life.

Additional veterinary studies, such as the Dog Aging Project (DAP) and the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study (GRLS)4,5, are investigating various factors that influence canine aging, including genetics, lifestyle, and environmental aspects. Insights from these studies aim to clarify the mechanisms of aging and disease in dogs, ultimately enhancing disease diagnosis and prevention.

If the concept of ‘geroscience’ is unfamiliar, you’re not alone. A 2024 paper published in Pathology and Oncology Research defines geroscience as “an emerging discipline at the intersection of aging and disease that seeks to illuminate the relationship between the aging process and the pathogenesis of age-related diseases.”6

In simpler terms, geroscience aims to understand the biology of aging to proactively modify it, thereby extending healthspan and increasing the number of disease-free years.

Another way to think about geroscience is that it focuses on the foundational biological mechanisms of aging rather than a narrow approach that treats diseases one by one.

Geroscience investigates the hallmarks of aging—biological processes that contribute to age-related ailments. Some of these hallmarks include cellular senescence (the point at which cells cease to divide and begin to age), mitochondrial dysfunction, and genomic instability. An article by La Petite Labs elaborates on the 12 hallmarks of aging in dogs in detail.

By concentrating on the biology of aging and prioritizing healthspan, geroscience stands in stark contrast to the conventional, disease-focused approach to senior wellness.

So, where is this trend heading? Veterinary geriatric care is evolving to adopt a multi-system approach aimed at prolonging canine healthspan by proactively addressing the hallmarks of aging. With pet geroscience, the goal extends beyond merely enabling dogs to live longer; it encompasses being stewards of their lifespans, ensuring they remain disease-free for extended periods.

Nutrition plays a critical role in geroscience. ‘Geroprotective nutrition’ refers to the use of food and supplements that target biological hallmarks of aging to enhance healthspan. There are several strategies for implementing geroscience through diet.

Moderate calorie restriction, without causing malnutrition, can prolong both lifespan and healthspan in dogs, partly by enhancing mitochondrial function and lowering inflammation. A study by Purina demonstrated this effect in Labrador Retrievers, revealing that those fed 25% fewer calories lived nearly two years longer and experienced a slower onset of arthritis and cancer compared to those on a non-calorie-restricted diet.7

Intermittent fasting also addresses multiple hallmarks of aging, aiding in reducing insulin resistance and oxidative stress, ultimately delaying disease onset.8

Macronutrients—comprising protein, carbohydrates, and fat—are the substantial components of our diets.

Older dogs require a different macronutrient balance compared to their younger counterparts to maintain good health and guard against age-related conditions, such as muscle atrophy. Senior dog food is increasingly being optimized to provide age-appropriate levels of high-quality protein, with lower fat and fewer carbohydrates, to prevent diseases associated with aging.

Geroprotective supplements enhance the dietary strategies mentioned earlier. These can be categorized into ‘general support’ and ‘geroscience-style support.’

While nutrition plays a significant role in geroscience, a few geroprotective medications are noteworthy. Presently, these medications are not yet available for geroscience-focused canine care, but they are under investigation in veterinary clinical research.

Several canine longevity biotech companies, like Loyal, are actively developing experimental therapies aimed at supporting healthy aging in dogs.

Although cellular senescence is a natural occurrence, the buildup of these aging cells leads to inflammation, tissue damage, and the onset or progression of diseases. Furthermore, when senescent cells linger in the body, they can induce senescence in other cells, accelerating the aging process. Recent pharmaceutical innovations are targeting the adverse effects of these cells. One category of geroprotective medications, known as senolytics, triggers apoptosis (cell death) in senescent cells, allowing the aging cell population to be replenished with new cells.10 Another class of drugs, termed senomorphics, functions similarly to senolytics by inhibiting the spread of cellular senescence.10

Physical exercise and cognitive stimulation are crucial for a dog’s health, much like they are for humans. On a molecular level, physical activity enhances mitochondrial function, boosts immune response, and reduces insulin resistance.11 Low-impact activities, such as leisurely walks around the neighborhood, are beneficial and suitable for older dogs who may not have the same energy levels as they once did.

Cognitive enrichment promotes mental engagement at any age, keeping the brain sharp and delaying cognitive decline. Interactive toys and training exercises help maintain the brain’s neuroplasticity—its ability to form new connections between neurons and generate new brain cells.

While geroscience can become quite complex, a background in molecular biology is not necessary to take proactive steps for your dog’s health and well-being. What is essential is a dedicated attitude towards implementing geroprotective strategies to enhance your dog’s healthspan.

Maintaining open communication with your veterinarian is vital for monitoring your dog’s health, enabling adjustments to their diet and lifestyle throughout their lives to postpone the onset of diseases. Your veterinarian can recommend suitable nutrition for different life stages, conduct regular wellness examinations, and prescribe necessary preventive care for your dog.
