Milly’s Adventures: A Cat’s Journey of Freedom and Fun
Welcome to the Wednesday Cats of Catster! Each week, we spotlight a tale from our community of cat enthusiasts. This edition features Isabel and her charming rescue cat, Milly.

Greetings! Welcome back to Keeping Up With The Kardashians: Milly on a Golf Course (Part Two)!
In the first installment, I detailed our family’s transition to a picturesque golf course, highlighting Milly’s swift adaptation and her newfound love for leashed walks. Now, prepare to delve into the next segment of her adventure—where the excitement truly escalates!
Exploring the Outdoors: Milly’s Newfound Freedom
From her inaugural solo outdoor escapades to leisurely off-leash outings and peaceful picnics, Milly rapidly claimed the tranquil village of Devonvale as her own. Yet, with this newfound freedom came a dose of mischief. Milly’s impressive hunting instincts surged, presenting us with the unexpected task of safeguarding local wildlife from our pint-sized predator.
Adventures and Challenges: Navigating Milly’s Independence
In this segment, we’ll explore how we managed Milly’s expanding independence, the heartwarming moments that melted our hearts, and the innovative solution we devised to maintain her freedom while cherishing nature. Let’s dive in!

Milly didn’t merely dabble in hunting—she thrived at it. With the precision of a feline ninja and the exuberance of a kitten embracing her abilities, she quickly established herself as a formidable hunter from an early age (mostly targeting flies and moths). I must admit, moths terrify me!
Truth be told, it was likely our influence that honed her skills as a prey stalker. We inadvertently nurtured a budding hunter, each of us curious and inventive in our own right! We would hold her petite body like a weapon, and she’d capture flying intruders with her two front paws like a miniature karate master! A karate kitten, if you will. Those poor bugs didn’t stand a chance… It was also quite amusing to see us racing around the house with a professional insect catcher that could fit in your pocket.
Even by feline standards, her natural prowess was remarkable… and slightly daunting.
A Delicate Balance: Wildlife and Cat Instincts
Let’s address the elephant (or rather, the bird) in the room. If you’re sensitive about wildlife and hunting, you’re not alone—so am I. I cherish birds, and I was always mindful of Milly’s impact.
However, a cat will be a cat. This wasn’t about ignoring reality; we sought a solution (keep reading!).
Consider this a gentle disclaimer: this narrative includes nature in its raw form.

Once the last golfer stored their clubs, the course transformed into our golden, serene playground. Milly, unrestrained and happy, would relax next to us on the lush green grass, gazing at the sun setting on the horizon. These tranquil moments solidified our bond as a little “Fa-Milly.” We were utterly content.
We’d settle down for a picnic dinner or enjoy a glass of red wine to end the day while she rolled in the grass, darted about, and chased moths. Those evenings felt suspended in time—peaceful, glowing moments that will forever be etched in my memory.

One of the sweetest surprises awaited us at the end of long days. As we drove into the garage—still a short walk from the house—there she would be. Sitting pretty, tail curled, ready with chirpy meows and purring welcomes. No matter how chaotic the day had been, Milly’s joyful little face waiting for us brought pure, instant happiness.
She even became popular among our distant neighbors who shared the garage space with us, providing everyone a delightful show before retiring for the evening after a hard day’s work. Instant joy!
Milly’s hunting resume expanded rapidly: rats and mice, a few unfortunate birds (most of whom were thankfully rescued), and one tragically plump mole who never saw it coming. We held a small funeral for him. Yet, here’s the thing—Milly was thriving. She radiated health, confidence, and purpose. It was hard not to admire her, even while cleaning up the aftermath.
Believe it or not, Milly sported two bells on her collar, a glistening metal ID tag (which essentially acted as a third bell), and an Apple AirTag to monitor her every move (helicopter parenting at its finest). Yet, she still managed to outsmart a handful of small defenseless creatures… In her defense, they weren’t exactly the brightest animals around.
The clanking of her collar accessories was quite pronounced. I could hear her galloping home from a mile away! This was beneficial because it conditioned me to jump up from my desk the moment I heard her bells. I would then dash back and forth between her two entry points (the balcony window and the office window beside me) to see where she was coming from and check if she had caught anything (most of the time, she hadn’t). Nevertheless, I was prepared for anything!

Regrettably, I couldn’t be home 24/7, despite working remotely. I was at home about 70% of the week. However, there were a few occasions when we returned home to an unexpected surprise… One day, the unfortunate victim was the most adorable, plump little mole, lying on our living room floor. I was heartbroken and felt incredibly guilty. The mole received a small burial, and we decided it was time to take more serious measures to curb Milly’s hunting instincts.
A Creative Solution: Milly’s Stylish Puffer Jacket
Enter: the solution. After extensive online searching and feeling guilty, we found our answer—Milly’s iconic designer cat puffer jacket crafted by my mother-in-law. Equal parts adorable and functional, it made her appear like a tiny, unimpressed fashionista while dulling her stealth just enough to give the little critters a fighting chance.
Initially, she despised it, but it was effective. Best of all? Our sunset picnics, garage greetings, and Milly’s freedom could persist, albeit with fewer casualties.

Milly’s journey embodies balance—between instinct and intention, freedom and responsibility, wildness and love. Observing her thrive outdoors was a gift, even when it came with unforeseen challenges. However, discovering a way to allow her to be a cat while safeguarding the world around her felt like a small victory.
These memories—her frolicking through golden grass, soft meows echoing from the garage, her reluctantly fashionable puffer jacket—represent the tapestry of a season I’ll always cherish. I am thankful for every moment and lesson learned.
Stay tuned! After 18 months, we relocated back to our second-floor apartment, leaving Milly quite perplexed. So, we installed a cat door!
