Florida Man Faces Charges for Neglecting Infested Dogs
Florida Man Charged with Animal Cruelty After Dogs Found Covered in Fleas and Neglected
In Seminole County, Florida, Fredrick Vihlen, a resident of Sanford, is confronting serious animal cruelty charges after authorities reported that he permitted his two dogs to endure a severe flea infestation, leading to hair loss and painful sores. Investigators claim that the ongoing neglect caused both animals to live in extreme discomfort.

Vihlen recently appeared in court to respond to the accusations, which involve claims that he neglected to provide adequate care for his Labrador Retriever, Teddy, and a pug named Gal. Court documents indicate that one of the dogs had lost nearly half of its fur while both were observed scratching and biting themselves incessantly due to flea-related irritation.
The investigation commenced after Seminole County Animal Services received a tip regarding one dog allegedly being confined in a bedroom for over 36 hours without access to food or water in Vihlen’s absence. Upon inspection, an officer discovered evident signs of neglect and immediately attempted to intervene.

The officer returned multiple times over several days to monitor the dogs and to help Vihlen comprehend the urgency of the situation. She provided him with medicated flea shampoo and strongly recommended taking both dogs to a veterinarian for necessary treatment. However, on her subsequent visit, she discovered that the shampoo bottle remained unopened and the dogs’ condition had significantly deteriorated.
According to the official report, Teddy, the Labrador, was infested with fleas, had numerous open sores, and had lost approximately 50 percent of his fur. Gal, the pug, was also in distress, visibly agitated, and constantly scratching herself in a futile attempt to alleviate her discomfort. The officer concluded that both dogs urgently required medical intervention.

When Vihlen appeared in court, he vehemently denied all allegations, labeling the situation a “witch hunt” and asserting that he was being unjustly targeted. The judge was not swayed by his claims and ordered his continued confinement at the Seminole County Jail while the legal proceedings advance.
Both dogs have been removed from Vihlen’s residence and are now receiving the essential care they require. Teddy is currently under treatment at Seminole County Animal Services, where veterinarians are working diligently to restore his health and well-being. Meanwhile, Gal has been placed with a new family that can offer her the attention and ongoing medical support she needs.

This incident underscores the significant suffering that can arise from neglect, even in the absence of overt physical abuse. Advocates for animal welfare emphasize that routine grooming, preventive care, and timely veterinary visits are vital for maintaining pet health. For animals like Teddy and Gal, such simple acts of compassion can significantly affect their recovery, serving as a reminder that pet ownership encompasses both love and responsibility.
