Dog Owner Issues Warning After Disturbing Grooming Incident
Florida Man Alleges Mobile Groomer Inflicted Serious Injury on His Dog
In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Russ Horowitz is raising alarms after his small dog, Charlie, sustained a shocking injury during what was meant to be a straightforward grooming session. Typically, Russ handles the grooming of his five-year-old Yorkie-poo himself, but he opted for Sassy’s Mobile Pet Grooming after noticing an attractive discount online. The aftermath, he claims, has left him devastated and furious.

Upon Charlie’s return, Russ immediately noticed something was off. His usually lively pup was shivering, cowering behind him, and displaying signs of extreme fear. Alarmed, Russ examined Charlie and uncovered a deep, open gash on his lower abdomen. The severity of the injury was so alarming that he could see into the wound, which appeared to have been treated with silver nitrate in a botched cauterization attempt. Frantic, he took Charlie to Victoria Park Animal Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Veterinarians confirmed that the nature of Charlie’s injury aligned with a grooming mishap, and the discoloration surrounding the wound indicated that chemical treatment had been used. The little dog required stitches, pain relief, and antibiotics, racking up medical expenses exceeding $700. When Russ reached out to the grooming service for an explanation, he claims they denied any responsibility. “They insisted he was injured before they began,” Russ recounted, “but I know my dog, and he was in perfect health when I dropped him off.”

As Russ delved further into the grooming service, his frustration mounted. He uncovered that the grooming company operated under multiple aliases, including Tiger’s Pet Grooming, Cinderella’s Pet Grooming, and Isabella’s Pet Spa, all sharing the same phone number yet lacking any credible business profiles or customer feedback. This pattern of rebranding made it nearly impossible to find trustworthy information about the business.

After lodging a formal complaint, the Animal Crimes Unit of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department initiated an inquiry into potential animal cruelty and business misconduct. Officers are investigating whether Sassy’s and its other names are linked to a single operator. The groomer continues to deny any wrongdoing, asserting that Charlie’s injury predated the appointment and suggesting Russ should have consulted their associated veterinarian.

Russ, however, remains adamant that the injury occurred during the grooming procedure and expresses that this ordeal has made him wary of mobile pet services. “Exercise extreme caution when leaving your pet with anyone,” he advised. “You trust them with your family, and that trust should never be shattered.”
Charlie is currently recuperating at home, gradually rebuilding his confidence but still exhibiting anxiety around unfamiliar faces. His experience serves as a crucial reminder for pet owners to meticulously vet any grooming service prior to making an appointment. What started as a routine grooming session has evolved into a painful lesson in vigilance, one that Russ hopes will spare others from a similar fate.
