Scrolling through social media, it’s common to come across posts showcasing homemade meals for pets. What intrigues me most isn’t just the meal itself, but the frequent comments expressing concern about the time required to prepare such dishes daily for their furry friends.
Having recently embarked on a personal meal plan (designed by a qualified nutritionist), I often dedicate my weekends to meal prepping. This approach simplifies my daily meal decisions, helping me adhere to my dietary commitments.
While preparing my meals this past weekend, a client requested a very low-carbohydrate recipe for her cat that could sustain her from Monday to Friday, alleviating the need for nightly cooking. This request was understandable, considering how vocal our cats can be when mealtime is delayed! Her cat, Ivy, has a particular fondness for chicken. Thus, I crafted a recipe that would keep Ivy satisfied for an entire week!

Both cooked and raw recipes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours (3 days). For longer storage, portion the meals and freeze them; they remain viable for consumption for up to 3 months. Simply thaw frozen food slowly the night before serving, and remember, thawed food should never be refrozen.
Even though my client sought a low-carbohydrate meal for Ivy, I mentioned that a source of fiber could be introduced into the diet if desired. While not essential for cats, fiber can provide certain health benefits when offered in moderation. I suggested gently cooked carrots (approximately 65.7 grams) as an option. However, Ivy showed a distinct aversion to the carrots, leading us to exclude them from the recipe.
Additionally, my client expressed interest in incorporating omega-3 fish oil into the recipe. While a small amount (around 3 grams for the entire recipe) is acceptable, it’s crucial to add any omega-3 or fish oils only at mealtime. I cautioned her against mixing it into the base recipe to avoid spoilage.
Another creative twist for this recipe is utilizing the leftover cooking water from the chicken hearts and breasts. Pour this flavorful broth into an ice cube tray and freeze it. These ice cubes serve as a “protein” treat that can be melted and added to your cat’s meals for extra hydration!
For most feline diets, nutritionists generally recommend that 60-80% of the diet consists of meat, fish, and eggs, while organ meats should make up about 10-30%. However, the heart is an exception to this guideline.
As a specialized muscle, the heart doesn’t have to be limited in quantity. It’s also one of the best natural sources of taurine (an essential amino acid for cats), which is why this recipe features it prominently.
Among organ meats, the heart is a favorite of mine for both cats and dogs. I particularly favor chicken hearts for their manageable size, making them easy to portion for a balanced diet. Plus, they are often more cost-effective than other chicken parts, offering a budget-friendly option.
