Queens Man Faces Charges After Brutal Killing of Service Dog
Queens Man Indicted as Service Dog’s Gruesome Death Stirs Outrage
A Queens resident has been indicted on several charges related to a horrific case of animal cruelty that has left the local community in shock. Prosecutors allege that 29-year-old Isaiah Gurley is responsible for the brutal death of a pit bull service dog named Square K, which belonged to a family member.

The Queens District Attorney’s Office reports that the dog was placed in Gurley’s care in late July. Instead of offering protection and kindness, prosecutors claim Gurley subjected the service dog to a series of shocking acts of violence. Surveillance footage from July 24 allegedly shows Gurley dragging the lifeless pit bull along a street in South Ozone Park by its leash. Shortly thereafter, he is accused of pouring an accelerant over the dog’s body and igniting it.
A police officer stumbled upon the charred remains of the dog, which led to an immediate investigation. Subsequent post-mortem findings confirmed that Square K had succumbed to blunt force trauma to the head prior to being set ablaze, indicating that the dog had been severely beaten before the act of burning.

District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed her outrage, stating, “This dog suffered needlessly, and we have no tolerance for animal abuse in Queens County. As alleged, the defendant was supposed to be caring for a family member’s dog and instead subjected it to unfathomable cruelty as he killed the pit bull and then set it on fire.”
Following the incident, Gurley was arrested and now faces serious charges, including aggravated animal cruelty, arson, and harming a service animal. If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. He is currently being defended by attorneys from The Legal Aid Society, which typically refrains from commenting on ongoing cases.
Authorities have yet to reveal the circumstances that may have led to the horrific act, nor have they provided additional information about the family member who owned Square K. The indictment, however, ensures that the case will progress in Queens County Court, where prosecutors are determined to seek the most severe penalties permissible under the law.

The tragic demise of Square K has ignited widespread outrage within the community, with many advocating for stronger protections for service animals and more severe penalties for perpetrators of abuse. For District Attorney Katz, this case serves as a stark reminder of the cruelty that animals can face and the necessity for accountability in such instances.
