Dog Survives Coyote Attack, Now Wears Protective Vest

Piper’s Christmas Eve Coyote Encounter Sparks Remarkable Recovery

What started as a terrifying Christmas Eve evening in West Hartford has evolved into an inspiring tale of survival and resilience, featuring Piper, a small dog that narrowly avoided death after a coyote attack.

On that fateful night, Piper was seized and dragged across the street by a pack of coyotes, leaving her family in shock. “I feared the worst, but my wife pointed out that she was still breathing,” recounted her owner, Bruce Bourgoin. Quick action from his sister was pivotal; she wrapped the injured Piper in a towel and rushed her to an emergency veterinary clinic.

Piper spent months undergoing medical treatments and surgeries before achieving a full recovery. Now flourishing, her family has implemented additional safety measures, including a custom-made pink protective vest that is puncture-resistant and equipped with sharp spikes at the neck to deter any potential predators.

Experts in wildlife safety emphasize that events like this underline the dangers pets face from coyotes. Jay Kaplan, the director emeritus of the Roaring Brook Nature Center, stated that while coyotes in Connecticut primarily hunt small mammals such as chipmunks, rabbits, and squirrels, they will not hesitate to target cats and dogs when the opportunity arises. Some local coyotes are hybrids with wolves, making them larger and more formidable than typical coyotes due to their wolf ancestry.

The experience profoundly affected Piper’s family. “She’s our first dog, and I now understand the bond that dog and cat owners share. Pets become integral members of the family. I cherish that little dog,” Bourgoin expressed. Committed to providing Piper with the best possible life, they continue to take her on walks and outdoor excursions, albeit with heightened vigilance and protective measures.

Community support played a significant role in transforming Piper’s experience into one of hope. Friends and neighbors came together to support the Bourgoins, contributing to a GoFundMe campaign that alleviated the burden of expensive veterinary costs. Their kindness ensured Piper received the necessary care during her extensive recovery.

What began as a nightmare has since transformed into a powerful symbol of resilience. Piper’s new vest serves not only as protection but also as a testament to her survival spirit, her family’s love, and the generosity of a community determined to overcome tragedy. Today, she walks proudly, relishing the outdoors and embracing freedom, better equipped for whatever challenges may arise.
