Seattle Dog Daycare Shuts Down Amid Animal Cruelty Scandal
Seattle Dog Daycare Closes After Animal Cruelty Case Sparks Outrage
A dog daycare in the Seattle area has announced an indefinite closure in response to threats and harassment following the animal cruelty charges against one of its staff members, a situation that has sent shockwaves through the pet-loving community nationwide.
Closure Announcement
Lazy Dog, Crazy Dog, which operated well-liked daycare and boarding facilities in Ballard and West Seattle, made the announcement via a public statement on Sunday.

In their statement to KING 5 News, the company expressed, “Over the past two weeks, our employees and the business have faced escalating threats and harassment. The safety of our employees, the dogs in our care, and our customers is paramount. We simply cannot continue to safely offer our services under these conditions.”
Details of the Incident
This closure follows the charges against employee Dejean Bowens, who is accused of animal cruelty for allegedly kicking a dog named Mitch multiple times after the pet accidentally caused a disturbance.
Court documents reveal that Bowens later admitted to another employee about the incident. Mitch sustained severe injuries, and despite the veterinary team’s intensive efforts, the beloved dog could not be saved.

Mitch was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic where he underwent surgery, but despite 20 minutes of CPR from the medical team, he could not be revived. His tragic death has left his owners and the community that trusted Lazy Dog, Crazy Dog heartbroken.
Legal Proceedings and Reactions
Bowens has pleaded not guilty to the charges. At his arraignment on October 13, he was placed under electronic home detention and prohibited from having any contact with dogs or cats until the case is resolved.
In the wake of Mitch’s death, his grieving owners have initiated a civil lawsuit against Lazy Dog, Crazy Dog, seeking justice for the loss of their pet.

In a follow-up statement, the company expressed their sorrow and outrage over the incident, stating, “We are heartbroken and outraged by the incident and have been working closely with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.”
However, as news of the situation spread, the daycare began receiving threats and harassment directed at staff members who were uninvolved in the incident. Concerned for the safety of all involved, the daycare made the difficult choice to suspend operations indefinitely.
A Community in Mourning
What was once a trusted establishment in Seattle’s dog care community now finds itself at the center of a tragic narrative that underscores the critical need for enhanced oversight and accountability in pet care services.

The future of Lazy Dog, Crazy Dog remains uncertain. The company has yet to announce whether it intends to reopen after the legal proceedings conclude, leaving local pet owners in a state of sadness and apprehension, hoping for justice for Mitch and improved standards for animal protection to arise from this tragic event.
