FDA Issues Historic Emergency Authorization for Canine Treatment

In a groundbreaking advancement for veterinary medicine, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted its inaugural Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a pet medication. The FDA has approved Credelio (lotilaner) chewable tablets for dogs that are at risk of infection from the New World screwworm, a perilous parasite that can cause severe tissue destruction and potentially fatal outcomes if not addressed promptly.

This authorization signifies a significant shift in the realm of veterinary emergency care. Previously utilized primarily for controlling fleas and ticks, Credelio has now been repurposed to combat a considerably more severe threat, following a thorough scientific evaluation that demonstrated its effectiveness against ongoing screwworm infestations.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H., highlighted the critical nature of this authorization, emphasizing the necessity for the agency to proactively address emerging threats to animal health. Dr. Timothy Schell, head of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, echoed this sentiment, indicating that the agency is also examining other emergency requests for additional species that may be at risk.

While the majority of dogs in the United States are at minimal risk, those residing in or traveling to areas near the U.S.-Mexico border are notably more susceptible. The New World screwworm, once eradicated from North and Central America, has shown a resurgence since 2022, raising alarm among veterinarians, wildlife agencies, and livestock producers alike. This parasite is a threat to all warm-blooded animals, posing risks not only to pets but also to agricultural interests and wildlife.

This authorization follows the declaration by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, who labeled the parasite a potential public health emergency in August 2025. This declaration allowed the FDA to implement emergency measures typically reserved for rapidly spreading diseases.

Credelio contains lotilaner, an active ingredient from the isoxazoline class of antiparasitic drugs. These medications are widely recognized for their effectiveness and general safety; however, the FDA cautions pet owners about the possibility of rare neurological side effects. Consequently, the treatment is available by prescription only, allowing veterinarians to closely monitor each situation.

Produced by Elanco US Inc., Credelio will maintain its EUA status until federal authorities decide to lift the emergency declaration or revoke the authorization based on future evaluations and disease developments. Its approval signifies a proactive measure to safeguard companion animals and bolster broader biosecurity initiatives.

As health officials continue to track the parasite’s spread, this authorization highlights an increasingly important reality: the protection of animal health is becoming ever more interconnected with public health and the integrity of national food systems.
